About Nagaland

Nagaland has been a priority state for the Project as the state has many hard-to-reach areas and is also home to a large number of tribal communities. The state has many hilly regions and majority of the people live in rural areas. While access to healthcare facilities and awareness has been easier for people in the urban areas, but it has been challenging for people at the rural level. There have been improvements regarding basic infrastructure facilities but many rural areas in Nagaland are still grappling with these challenges to access health services and education. The MOMENTUM Routine Immunization Project identified these challenges, conducted intensive community engagement activities and used innovative techniques to reach the most far-flung areas.

Sub-Awardees Working in Nagaland

The project activities were implemented in 11 districts through 2 sub-awardees: TCIF, ISRN

Key strategies adapted by the state

This project's core strategy was collaboration, uniting stakeholders across departments to overcome vaccination barriers and uplift communities. The approach included health convergence meetings, stakeholder engagement, data-driven decision-making, targeted interventions, and social mobilization activities. Some focused strategies were as follows:

01

Influencer Engagement

Right influencers in the villages were identified during the introduction of the awareness and sensitization programs. Village Council Chairman, Student leaders, women leaders from the church and civil societies, church leaders, or any person who is popular in the village were brought on board by the project team. Photo and video messaging encouraging the unvaccinated people were disseminated through WhatsApp and Twitter to inspire more people, especially from that particular area/village.

02

Reaching the most excluded

the Project team travelled to the far-flung and most secluded districts to spread awareness. These villages are extremely hard to reach and have limited to no access and awareness.

03

Targetted group meetings

Meetings and group discussions were done with the first dose beneficiaries and Inter Personnel Communication with working mothers during the house-to-house campaign. Group meetings with pregnant women, lactating mothers, and elderly were also conducted to mobilize the communities

04

Targeted capacity development

All stakeholders at the village level wherever the Project team visited were sensitized and trained according to their roles in the area/village. The Project team conducted rigorous follow up to assess the development and build vaccine confidence.
