HPV is the most common viral infection of the reproductive tract. While the majority of HPV infections are asymptomatic and resolve spontaneously, persistent infection with HPV may result in cervical cancer. About 99.7% of cervical cancers are caused by persistent infection of the genital tract by high-risk types of human papillomavirus.
In India, Cervical Cancer is the 2nd leading cancer among women, with an incidence of 10.4 and Mortality of 5.6 per 1,00,000 women years. In 2024, there were an estimated 78,499 new cases and 42,392 deaths due to cervical cancer.
HPV Vaccination Campaign Operational Guidelines
The HPV Vaccination campaign was officially launched by the Honorable Prime Minister of India on 28 February 2026. Simultaneously, all states/UTs launched the vaccine on the same day, officiated by the highest levels of state level officials and Ministers
JSIPL is the lead partner, supporting the MoHFW through techno-managerial support for the introduction of the HPV vaccine in the campaign mode across the country.
The support included:
• Development the Technical Documents: Operational Guidelines and FAQs for Medical Officers.
• Development of the state specific Learning Resource packages.
• Facilitating 15 Regional/State Training of Trainers (ToTs) across the country.
• Approximately 1370 personnel were trained in these ToTs.
• Facilitating the cascade trainings: district and sub-district level trainings.
• Technical support in preparedness assessment and planning.
• Support in field implementation and programme review.
JSIPL will continue to support the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) and all states in the efforts to vaccinate all eligible adolescent girls with HPV vaccine.
